Though North Myrtle Beach is a relatively new
community, created by incorporation in 1968, the rich
history of our area begins with the Waccamaw and Winyah
Indian tribes prior to the 1500s. As the Spaniards began
their discovery and exploration of the "new world," many
of the explorers passed through North Myrtle Beach on
their way further north. Centuries later, during the Revolutionary War, a
North Carolina regiment marched through the area on their way to
protect Georgia from the British Redcoats. Even the first President of the
United States, George Washington spent the night in what is now the
North Myrtle Beach area.
For decades, dreaded pirates patrolled the coast of present day South
Carolina. Legend has it, that the infamous pirate Blackbeard operated in
the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, just off the coast of North Myrtle
Beach. In fact, it is said his beloved ship, Queen Anne's Revenge, is still
at the bottom of the ocean just off the coast.
